EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)

EPD stands for Environmental Product Declaration. Known as Çevresel Ürün Beyanı in Turkish, it is an internationally valid report that objectively and comparably documents the environmental impacts of a product throughout its entire life cycle.

This document is verified by independent organizations and prepared in accordance with standards such as ISO 14025 and norms like EN 15804. The aim is not to simply state "how eco-friendly" a product is, but to demonstrate how much environmental impact the product has from production to disposal using numerical data.

In short:

An EPD is not a "green label"; it is a transparent environmental performance scorecard.

What is an EPD?

EPD is a document that systematically analyzes and reports the environmental impacts of products in all stages, starting from raw materials to production, use, and final disposal. EPDs are prepared in accordance with international standards and are verified by third parties. While these documents enable businesses to achieve their environmental sustainability goals, they also help them gain a competitive advantage in the market.

Scope of EPD

EPD documents comprehensively address many environmental impacts of products, such as:

  • Global warming potential (carbon footprint)
  • Water use
  • Air and water pollution
  • Resource consumption
  • Effect on the ozone layer

How is an EPD Prepared?

How is an EPD Prepared?

The EPD preparation process is carried out with a systematic and detailed approach. This process consists of four main stages in accordance with international standards:

1. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

LCA analyzes the environmental impacts of the product in processes from raw material to final disposal. At this stage, energy, water, raw materials used, and the resulting emissions are evaluated in detail.

2. Data Collection

Data regarding production processes, distribution, use, and disposal stages are collected. These data include various environmental impacts such as energy consumption, water use, amount of waste, and emissions.

3. Impact Assessment

The collected data are analyzed and classified according to different environmental impact categories. This stage clearly reveals the environmental performance of the product.

4. Preparation of the EPD Document

The obtained results are reported in a format compliant with international standards and verified by an independent organization. The verification process increases the reliability of the document.

Importance of EPD for Businesses

Importance of EPD for Businesses

EPD is a strategic tool that helps businesses achieve their environmental sustainability goals. Here are some of the advantages that EPD offers to businesses:

  • Transparency and Credibility: EPD presents the environmental impacts of products in an impartial and standardized manner. This ensures credibility in the eyes of customers and stakeholders.
  • Market Competition: Products with EPD certification are more preferred in sustainability-oriented markets. Eco-friendly products play a significant role in consumers' purchasing decisions.
  • Legal Compliance: Many countries and regions make it mandatory to report the environmental impacts of products. EPDs facilitate compliance with these legal requirements and protect businesses from punitive sanctions.
  • Cost Savings: The data obtained during the EPD process allows for the identification of waste and energy losses in production processes. This translates into cost savings in the long term.
  • Stakeholder Trust: EPD documents create an important element of trust for investors, customers, and business partners. Businesses that clearly state their environmental sustainability goals build stronger relationships with stakeholders.
