CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism)

CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism)

CBAM, stands for Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (also known as SKDM in Turkish), is a mechanism implemented by the European Union to bring its carbon footprint under control. This regulation specifically targets imports from carbon-intensive sectors, making it mandatory to measure the carbon emissions of imported products and apply carbon pricing. In the first phase, energy-intensive sectors such as iron and steel, cement, aluminum, fertilizer, electricity, and hydrogen have been included within the scope of CBAM. However, it is planned to include sectors such as chemicals, plastics, paper, glass, and ceramics in this regulation in the coming years.

The Importance of CBAM and the EU’s Objectives

CBAM is a critical part of the EU's strategy to reach the net-zero emissions target by 2050, requiring companies operating in these sectors to accurately report their carbon emissions.

Risks Faced by Companies Failing to Comply with CBAM

Companies that do not fulfill their CBAM obligations may face serious financial, commercial, and reputational risks. In case of non-compliance, additional costs may be imposed on imported products, which may lead to a decrease in competitiveness in the European market. Furthermore, companies may face the risk of being unable to operate in the European Union market and encounter legal sanctions due to non-compliance. In addition, being perceived as environmentally indifferent may lead to a loss of reputation in the eyes of customers.

What is CBAM (SKDM)?

What is CBAM (SKDM)?

The CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism), implemented as part of the European Union's (EU) climate change mitigation strategy, stands out as a significant step aimed at increasing sustainability in global trade. This mechanism aims to control the environmental impact of imported products by pricing carbon emissions.

CBAM supports reducing the carbon footprint in energy-intensive sectors and helps the EU achieve its 2050 net-zero emissions target.

What is the Objective of CBAM?

  • Preventing Carbon Leakage: It prevents companies from avoiding carbon regulations by shifting production to low-cost countries.
  • Fair Competition: By balancing carbon costs, it creates a level playing field between producers within Europe and importers.
  • Environmental Sustainability: It contributes to global climate goals by encouraging the reduction of carbon emissions.

Sectors Covered by CBAM

CBAM initially focuses on energy-intensive sectors. The sectors included in the scope of the regulation in the first phase are as follows:

  • Iron and Steel
  • Cement
  • Aluminum
  • Electricity
  • Hydrogen
  • Fertilizers

It is planned to include other heat-intensive sectors in the regulation in the following periods.

How to Ensure CBAM Compliance?
  1. Measurement of Carbon Emissions: Companies must measure the carbon emissions generated from their production processes.
  2. Reporting of Data: Companies within the scope of CBAM must report their carbon emissions in the formats required by the EU.
